Actinide Burning in a Standard Pressurized Water Reactor

چکیده

This study investigates actinide burning in a standard lattice PWR. It assumes that after the first loading of depleted uranium, plutonium and minor actinides, only the fission products are removed and only depleted uranium and the plutonium/minor actinide mixture are added. The relative concentrations of plutonium and minor actinide feed are always maintained the same as PWR discharge fuel after 33,000 MWD/MTU burnup. It is found that the minor actinides act as a burnable absorber. After seven reloading, a burnup of 64,000 MWD/MTU yields a reactivity change of less than 3% zik/k . This property of the minor actinides suggests that the minor actinides should not be separated from the plutonium. In equilibrium, one actinide burner would be required for every two standard PWRS.

Higher Actinide Transmutation in the Almr

The Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor (ALMR) is a US Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored fast reactor design based on the Power Reactor, Innovative Small Module (PRISM) concept originated by General Electric and fieled with ternary metal Iiel (under development by Argonne National Laboratory in the IFR Program). Higher actinide transmutation may be accomplished in the ALMR by using either a breedi...

Thermal-Hydraulics analysis of pressurized water reactor core by using single heated channel model

Thermal hydraulics of nuclear reactor as a basis of reactor safety has a very important role in reactor design and control. The thermal-hydraulic analysis provides input data to the reactor-physics analysis, whereas the latter gives information about the distribution of heat sources, which is needed to perform the thermal-hydraulic analysis. In this study single heated channel model as a very f...

Core Loading Design for Bushehr Pressurized Water Reactor

The modified out-in fuel management strategy was applied to the core loading design for the first four cycles of the Bushehr (Iran-1) KWU designed Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR). The minimum peak-to-average power density was chosen as the objective function of the optimization process. Lattice homogenization and group constants generation were performed by using the LEOPARD computer code. For ...

Cheng/Cerbone-Page 1 PROSPECT OF NUCLEAR WASTE TRANSMUTATION AND POWER PRODUCTION IN FUSION REACTORS

A small tokamak-based fusion reactor can be attractive for actinide waste transmutation. Equilibrium concentrations of transuranium isotopes were estimated in a molten-salt based fusion transmutation reactor. Nuclear performance parameters were derived for two types of fusion-driven transmutation reactors: Pu-assisted and minor actinidesonly systems. The minor actinide-only burning system appea...
